The 5-9 Formula Line Breakk

Online Travel Agent

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your business?

My name is Sandra, and by day I work as a marketing coordinator, but my real passion lies in travel, which I’ve turned into an exciting side hustle as an online travel agent. I started this venture a few years ago after helping friends and family plan trips. It quickly evolved into a business where I provide personalized itineraries, book accommodations and tours, and give insider advice to travelers looking for unique experiences.

My business caters mainly to busy professionals, couples, and small groups who want bespoke travel experiences without the stress of planning every detail themselves. I focus on crafting personalized journeys, leveraging my extensive network of local contacts worldwide to ensure every trip is special, authentic, and memorable.

What was your main inspiration for getting into this niche?

My inspiration came from my own love of exploring new places and cultures. I realized early on that many people found travel planning overwhelming and time-consuming, while I genuinely enjoyed researching and curating memorable experiences. The satisfaction I felt after seeing friends thrilled by their vacations sparked the idea to offer this as a specialized service.

Moreover, I’ve always been passionate about helping others discover the joy of travel beyond the typical tourist routes. My goal is to give people richer, more authentic adventures. Seeing the enthusiasm of my clients when they return from their trips keeps me motivated and deeply committed to growing my travel agent business.

How do you define success in your business?

For me, success in my online travel business isn’t solely about financial gain, though profitability matters. It's primarily about building strong relationships with my clients and seeing them genuinely satisfied with the unique experiences I create for them. Receiving positive feedback, seeing clients come back for subsequent trips, and getting referrals are clear indicators that I'm on the right track.

Another measure of success for me is having a positive impact on the local communities and businesses I partner with. Supporting sustainable tourism and local entrepreneurs, ensuring that my travelers contribute meaningfully to the destinations they visit, is hugely rewarding and a central part of my business philosophy.

If you were to start again from scratch, what would you do differently?

If I were beginning my online travel agent side hustle again, I'd definitely put more energy into networking with industry professionals early on. Rather than tackling everything alone, I would have sought mentorship from experienced travel agents to learn quicker from their experiences, pitfalls, and tips. Leveraging someone else's expertise early on could have saved me a lot of trial-and-error in my initial bookings.

Additionally, I'd prioritize collecting and showcasing testimonials and client stories from the start. While I knew customer satisfaction was vital, initially, I didn’t actively showcase my successes. Now, I realize that visible, authentic testimonials build immediate trust with potential clients, making it easier to grow the business quickly.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out with a similar gig?

My top advice would be to specialize early and clearly define your niche. Don’t try to cater to everyone; instead, identify your passion and expertise—whether that's luxury travel, adventure tourism, sustainable experiences, or family-focused trips—and focus your business around it. This clarity not only helps differentiate you from larger, more generic services but also builds stronger loyalty among clients who appreciate your specific expertise.

Secondly, invest time in building genuine relationships with both your clients and your service providers—hotels, guides, tour companies. Having a trustworthy network greatly enhances the quality of your offerings, ensuring consistently high customer satisfaction and repeat business. In the travel industry, credibility and trust are absolutely essential.

How much do you earn from this business?

Currently, my travel agent side hustle brings in around $1,500 to $2,000 monthly. It's a figure I'm pleased with, especially given it's something I do alongside my full-time job. The income varies seasonally and depending on how many bookings I handle each month, but it’s steadily growing as I refine my approach and expand my client network.

In the near future, I'm aiming to double that by ramping up my marketing efforts and exploring new, high-value niches. It’s definitely a rewarding business financially, but the real satisfaction comes from combining my passion for travel with helping others create unforgettable experiences.
