Nikki’s Book Folding Frenzy
Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your business?
I create unique handmade upcycled and recycled gifts using hardback books and coloured papers. Following specific templates, I carefully cut and fold the pages of each book to form intricate pictures or words. In addition to book folding, I craft a variety of paper flowers and sculptures, and I offer custom items tailored to customers' specifications and tastes.
What was your main inspiration for getting into this line of work?
I first came across this art form online several years ago, and I was immediately captivated. I decided to try creating my own pieces and shared them with family and friends, who were all incredibly supportive and encouraging. Nearly ten years later, I still love witnessing people's reactions when they see my work for the first time—their awe and curiosity about how it's done and how long it takes. That sense of wonder continues to inspire me every day.
How do you define success in your business?
Success, to me, is a blend of personal fulfilment and customer satisfaction. I couldn't achieve any of this without the unwavering support of my family. I work hard, often spending weekends at fairs and evenings crafting, but I genuinely enjoy what I do. Taking pride in my work is essential, and I strive to be honest with customers about timelines and themes. Ultimately, my goal is for every customer to be delighted with their purchase.
If you were to start again from scratch, what would you do differently?
If I could start over, I would invest more time in research and planning. Understanding the market, sourcing materials efficiently, and having a clear business plan would have made the initial stages smoother and more effective.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a similar field?
Be honest with yourself about your capabilities and set realistic targets. It's crucial not to get discouraged by a bad week; stay positive and keep pushing forward because next week might be much better. Patience and perseverance are key in any creative business.
Where can people find you?
You can find me on Facebook. I'm also in the process of setting up a website, so if anyone is interested in helping with that, it would be greatly appreciated!
