Turning Her Passion for Education into a Profitable Online Tutoring Side Hustle
How Rachel makes $2k a month through online tutoring.
Happy Sunday. In a world where side hustles are becoming the norm, Rachel stands out for turning her teaching skills into a thriving online tutoring business. By day, she's a high school English teacher; by night (and weekends), she's helping students across the country gain confidence in their reading and writing abilitiesāall from the comfort of her home. We sat down with Rachel to learn more about how she got started, what keeps her motivated, and the lessons sheās picked up along the way.
Now, over to Rachel!
Online Tutoring Side Hustle

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your business?
My name is Rachel, and by day, I work as a high school English teacher. In the evenings and on weekends, I run an online tutoring side hustle where I help studentsāmostly middle and high schoolersāimprove their reading comprehension, writing skills, and test prep strategies. I started small, working with just a couple of students via Zoom, and now I regularly tutor 8 to 10 students each week.
My tutoring sessions are personalized and flexible. I focus on building confidence in students, especially those who struggle in traditional classroom settings. What makes my side hustle really rewarding is the ability to make a tangible difference in a student's academic life, while also earning an extra income on the side.
What was your main inspiration for getting into this niche?
My inspiration really came from seeing the gaps in the traditional education system. In my full-time teaching job, I often wished I had more one-on-one time with students to help them truly grasp the material. Some kids just need a different approach or a more supportive environment to thrive. I realized I could provide that through tutoring.
It started with helping a neighbor's daughter prepare for her SAT essay, and I loved the focused, low-pressure setting. After that, I figuredāwhy not do more of this? It combined my teaching skills with the flexibility of setting my own schedule. Plus, Iāve always been passionate about education equity, and tutoring allows me to offer sliding scale rates so I can help families who might not otherwise be able to afford extra academic support.
How do you define success in your business?
Success for me is a mix of student progress and personal fulfillment. If a student goes from dreading English homework to writing essays theyāre proud of, thatās a huge win. Seeing that growthāacademically and in their self-confidenceāis incredibly rewarding. I also measure success by how many returning clients I have and the quality of the referrals I receive. Word-of-mouth is everything in tutoring.
On a personal level, success also means maintaining a good balance. I started this side hustle to supplement my income, not to burn out. So if I can earn a decent amount, make a positive impact, and still have time for myself, Iād call that a success. Iāve also grown in confidence as an educator and entrepreneur, which is something I didnāt expect when I first started.
If you were to start again from scratch, what would you do differently?
Looking back, I wish I had treated it more like a business from the beginning. At first, I didnāt have set policies around cancellations or payments, which led to a few awkward situations. Now I have a proper onboarding process, with a welcome packet, clear expectations, and even automated reminders.
Iād also have invested in marketing sooner. I relied too much on word-of-mouth for the first year, which limited my growth. Once I made a simple website and started posting tips on Instagram and Facebook, I started attracting more inquiries and better-fit clients. So, if I had a do-over, Iād be more strategic and organized from day one.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out with a similar gig?
Start small, but start with intention. Know who your ideal student is and tailor your services accordingly. You donāt have to tutor every subjectāstick to your strengths, and youāll attract the right clients. Also, donāt be afraid to charge what your time is worth. It can be tempting to underprice yourself in the beginning, but remember: you're providing a valuable service.
Iād also recommend setting boundaries early. Have clear policies in place about scheduling, payments, and communication. It makes things smoother for both you and your clients. Lastly, donāt underestimate the power of testimonials. Ask for feedback from happy parents and studentsāit goes a long way in building trust with future clients.
How much do you earn from this business?
On average, I earn between $1,200 and $1,800 a month from tutoring, depending on the season. During exam prep months like March and October, I can bring in over $2,000. In summer, it dips a bit, but I offer enrichment programs and writing workshops that help fill the gap.
Itās not a full-time income, but as a side hustle, itās made a big difference. Itās helped me pay down student loans faster, take stress-free vacations, and even save up for a home renovation. And because Iām doing something I genuinely enjoy, it never really feels like āextra work.ā Itās been a win-win all around.
