Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your business?

Hi, I'm Rachel, and I run a part-time affiliate marketing business alongside my full-time job in digital marketing. I got started about four years ago when I realized I could leverage my love for writing and social media into something profitable. My main focus is in the health and wellness niche, promoting products like supplements, fitness programs, and mindfulness apps. Over time, I’ve expanded into a couple of other niches, including eco-friendly products and digital courses, but wellness remains my primary area.

Affiliate marketing fits perfectly into my lifestyle because it offers the flexibility to work whenever and wherever. Most of my work revolves around creating content that genuinely helps my audience while seamlessly recommending products I believe in. It's been an amazing way to build an additional income stream without sacrificing my day job or personal life.

What was your main inspiration for getting into this niche?

I was initially inspired by the idea of building something of my own that could generate passive income. I had been following a few bloggers and YouTubers who talked openly about earning commissions through affiliate links, and I thought, "If they can do it, why can't I?" In particular, I loved the idea of being rewarded for recommending products that had genuinely improved my life.

Health and wellness felt like a natural fit because I've always been passionate about fitness and mental well-being. Sharing personal stories about what worked for me created an authentic connection with my audience, making my promotions feel more like advice from a friend rather than a hard sell. That sense of authenticity is what keeps me motivated and makes the work feel meaningful.

How do you define success in your business?

Financially, I set realistic goals for my affiliate income, treating it as a "bonus" rather than my main salary. Hitting those monthly or quarterly targets feels great, but I'm even more focused on growing my email list, improving my SEO, and creating evergreen content that will continue to pay off years down the line. Longevity and integrity are my true benchmarks for success.

If you were to start again from scratch, what would you do differently?

If I could go back, I would definitely focus more on building an email list right from the start. I spent too much time relying solely on social media, which is unpredictable and constantly changing. Owning your audience through an email list gives you a lot more stability and control over your business.

I would also have niched down even further earlier on. In the beginning, I tried promoting too many different types of products, which made my messaging feel scattered. If I had concentrated on just one or two very specific audiences, I think I could have grown much faster and created stronger brand loyalty from the outset.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out with a similar gig?

Start by choosing a niche you're genuinely passionate about, not just one you think is profitable. Authenticity matters so much in affiliate marketing—people can tell when you're promoting something just for the commission. Focus on building trust first by offering valuable, honest content. Sales will follow naturally once you have that foundation.

Also, invest time in learning about SEO, email marketing, and content strategy early on. Those skills will pay dividends in the long run. And remember, affiliate marketing isn't a get-rich-quick scheme. It's a long game that requires consistency, patience, and ongoing learning. Celebrate the small wins along the way because they all add up over time.

How much do you earn from this business?

Right now, I earn between $2,000 and $3,500 per month from my affiliate marketing side hustle, depending on the season. The holidays, for example, are particularly profitable because people are in a buying mindset. In the slower months, it dips a little, but overall it’s very stable thanks to a mix of evergreen content and seasonal promotions.

It took me about a year and a half to start earning a few hundred dollars consistently, and about three years to reach my current level. I'm happy with what I make considering I only put in about 8–10 hours a week. It's more than enough to cover extra expenses like travel, savings, and a few luxury splurges without stressing over my main income.
