Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your business?

My name’s Riley, and I run a freelance graphic design side hustle. By day, I work as a marketing coordinator at a mid-sized tech company, but in the evenings and weekends, I dive into freelance design projects—everything from logos and branding kits to social media templates and digital illustrations. I started it about three years ago with just a few clients from my personal network, and now it’s grown to the point where I get consistent work through referrals and platforms like Behance and Instagram.

It’s one-person show, but I like to collaborate with copywriters and web developers when a project calls for it. My niche is helping small businesses and solopreneurs craft clean, modern branding that stands out—especially those in the lifestyle, wellness, and food spaces. I keep things flexible so I can manage it alongside my 9-to-5, but it’s definitely more than just a hobby now.

What was your main inspiration for getting into this niche?

Honestly, I’ve always been obsessed with visual aesthetics. Even back in high school, I was the person designing the yearbook layouts and posters for school events. But the real turning point was when a friend of mine opened a café and asked me to design her logo and menu. I loved the process—not just the design part, but really understanding her brand story and translating it into visuals that resonated. That project lit a spark for me.

After that, I realized there were tons of small business owners who had amazing ideas but lacked the design chops to bring them to life. That’s where I saw an opportunity: helping them create professional, cohesive branding without the overhead of a big agency. It felt meaningful to contribute to their journey, and that sense of impact still drives me today.

How do you define success in your business?

If I get to work on projects that challenge me creatively and let me grow my skills, that’s a big win. I also consider it a success when clients come back for more work or refer others to me. That tells me I’m not just meeting expectations, I’m exceeding them.

Another marker of success is balance. Since this is a side hustle, it’s important that it fits into my life without overwhelming it. I’ve learned to pace myself, set boundaries, and say no when necessary. Being able to choose the kind of work I take on, and still have time for friends, family, and rest—that’s a version of success I’m really proud of.

If you were to start again from scratch, what would you do differently?

If I had to start over, I’d focus way more on building a niche and a personal brand early on. In the beginning, I said yes to every kind of design work—flyers, t-shirts, even wedding invitations—because I didn’t want to turn down money. But that kind of work didn’t always align with what I actually enjoyed or wanted to be known for. Narrowing my focus sooner would’ve helped me attract my ideal clients faster.

I also wish I’d started investing in better tools and templates earlier. I was scrappy at first, which is fine, but spending a little money on high-quality mockups, fonts, and client onboarding templates would’ve saved me so much time and made my work feel more professional from the get-go. Sometimes it's worth paying for the systems that help you scale.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out with a similar gig?

Start small, but start smart. You don’t need a fancy website or a big portfolio to get going. Just put together a few strong samples—real or hypothetical—and start sharing them consistently online. Platforms like Instagram and Behance are great for getting visibility, and don’t underestimate the power of word of mouth. Let people in your network know what you’re doing.

Also, take time to really understand what kind of work lights you up. It’s tempting to chase every opportunity at first, but the more clarity you have about your style and ideal client, the faster you’ll build momentum. And don’t forget to set boundaries early. It’s easy to burn out if you treat your side hustle like a 24/7 job. Structure your time and keep it sustainable.

How much do you earn from this business?

Right now, I’m earning between $1,500 to $2,500 a month from my side hustle, depending on how many projects I take on. That’s after taxes and expenses. Some months are busier than others—like around the holidays or during launch season for clients—but overall, it’s a solid supplemental income.

At first, I was charging pretty low rates, but over time I learned the value of my work and started packaging my services better. Now I offer tiered branding packages, and I book fewer clients at higher rates. It’s not about working more hours—it’s about working smarter and providing more value. Eventually, I might take it full-time, but for now, it’s the perfect blend of creativity and income on the side.
